City of Bonn

An ICLEI Member since 2000, the Federal City of Bonn, Germany, is the seat of the ICLEI World Secretariat, and Lord Mayor Katja Dörner currently serves as Chair of the Climate Action Governance Portfolio for the ICLEI Global Executive Committee.

Recognized as a Resilience Hub by Making Cities Resilient 2030 (MCR2030) at the Daring Cities 2023, Bonn’s sustainability initiatives set a powerful example for other cities worldwide. Noteworthy is the city’s commitment to international cooperation, evident in its sustainability-oriented partnerships with cities across the globe, showcasing its dedication to real-world solutions. Additionally, the city presented its second Voluntary Local Review (VLR) on the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and its Bonn4Future Plan engaged citizens and stakeholders in climate action, contributing to the city’s Climate Action Plan for achieving climate neutrality by 2035.

Aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 11 (SDG11) — “Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable”— the Making Cities Resilience 2030 (MCR2030) is a cross-stakeholder global initiative that engages a network of 1,810 cities spanning 92 countries. Launched in 2020 during the first edition of Daring Cities, MCR2030 collaborates closely with thirteen core strategic partners, such as the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), UN-Habitat, and ICLEI.

The initiative grants the Resilience Hub certification to cities with proven track records in disaster risk reduction and resilience. Resilience Hubs are pivotal in fostering knowledge sharing, enhancing capacity, and providing valuable learning opportunities. Their exemplary practices should inspire other local governments, encouraging them to commit steadfastly to bolster resilience efforts. In 2023, Bonn was recognized as a Global Resilience Hub.
