Located along the Rhine River, Bonn is a global hub for sustainability and international cooperation. For more than 30 years, the city has hosted the United Nations, with 27 UN entities and over 170 organizations working on climate, biodiversity, and sustainable development, including the ICLEI World Secretariat.
As the home of the UN Climate Change Secretariat (UNFCCC), Bonn becomes the center of international climate diplomacy each June during the Bonn Climate Talks.
An ICLEI Member since 2000, Bonn has co-convened Daring Cities together with ICLEI since its launch in 2020, hosting the annual forum alongside the UN climate negotiations.
Recognized as a Resilience Hub by Making Cities Resilient 2030 (MCR2030) at the Daring Cities 2023, Bonn’s sustainability initiatives set a powerful example for other cities worldwide, known for its forward-looking approach to sustainability. With a target of achieving climate neutrality by 2035 and a strong commitment to resident engagement, Bonn demonstrates how local leadership can help shape global climate and resilience solutions.

Aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 11 (SDG11) — “Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable”— the Making Cities Resilience 2030 (MCR2030) is a cross-stakeholder global initiative that engages a network of 1,810 cities spanning 92 countries. Launched in 2020 during the first edition of Daring Cities, MCR2030 collaborates closely with thirteen core strategic partners, such as the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), UN-Habitat, and ICLEI.
The initiative grants the Resilience Hub certification to cities with proven track records in disaster risk reduction and resilience. Resilience Hubs are pivotal in fostering knowledge sharing, enhancing capacity, and providing valuable learning opportunities. Their exemplary practices should inspire other local governments, encouraging them to commit steadfastly to bolster resilience efforts. In 2023, Bonn was recognized as a Global Resilience Hub.
