The Paris Climate Agreement, adopted in 2015, introduced a new era for global climate action pursuant to its 1.5°C and climate neutrality goals, as well as embracing multilevel and multi-stakeholder collaboration. The UN Glasgow Climate Change Conference (COP26), in November 2021, is expected to kick-off the second phase of the Paris Agreement, with the submission of new and enhanced NDCs. These new and enhanced NDCs should be informed and guided by the ambition and potential of all levels of governments.
The Local Governments and Municipal Authorities (LGMA) Constituency has called for COP26 and the second phase of the Paris Agreement to be the moment when multilevel and collaborative action becomes the new normal, enabling thousands of local and regional governments to fulfill their 2030 and 2050 commitments. The second High-Level Day of Daring Cities 2021 will address perspectives for climate emergency leadership from local and regional governments, national governments, as well as global partners and civil society.
In this panel discussion, representatives of national governments who have declared a climate emergency, or enhanced their national climate ambitions towards 2030 and 2050 through revised Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), will discuss with local and regional government leaders on what is needed at multiple levels to put words into action and deliver critical climate action that treats the climate emergency with the urgency it requires.
