Ambitious local climate action

Wednesday, 6 October 2021

11:00 – 12:00 CEST (09:00 – 10:00 UTC)

The Paris Climate Agreement, adopted in 2015, introduced a new era for global climate action pursuant to its 1.5°C and climate neutrality goals, as well as embracing multilevel and multi-stakeholder collaboration.

The UN Glasgow Climate Change Conference (COP26), in November 2021, is expected to kick-off the second phase of the Paris Agreement, with the submission of new and enhanced NDCs. These new and enhanced NDCs should be informed and guided by the ambition and potential of all levels of governments. The Local Governments and Municipal Authorities (LGMA) Constituency has called for COP26 and the second phase of the Paris Agreement to be the moment when multilevel and collaborative action becomes the new normal, enabling thousands of local and regional governments to fulfill their 2030 and 2050 commitments. The second High-Level Day of Daring Cities 2021 will address perspectives for climate emergency leadership from local and regional governments, national governments, as well as global partners and civil society.

Here in this session, local and regional governments undertaking ambitious climate action to tackle the climate emergency showcase their actions in brief pre-recorded statements.

Statements will showcase action that is either about to take place or is already underway, but not yet completed. Action should be already sufficiently financed, and part of the local or regional governments’ dedicated actions to address the climate emergency, not just “climate action as usual”.
